MANY DUKE AND UNC FANS LOST SIGHT OF COMMON SENSE LAST WEEK

MANY DUKE AND UNC FANS LOST SIGHT OF COMMON SENSE LAST WEEK

I'm not a college basketball fan, but this one really makes me laugh.  For starters, you need to know that in the state of North Carolina, college basketball is like a religion.  Oddly and sadly, it is more revered than even the Panthers and/or the NFL.  As an employer in NC, I can tell you that the one week of the year that most employees call out sick or take vacation is ACC tournament week.  I don't quite get it, but that's just me.

Last week, North Carolina dealt with its biggest snowstorm in 14 years.  The state got anywhere from 4" to 14" of snow, depending on location.  While the snow came down at a rapid accumulating pace, the game between the Duke Blue Devils and the UNC Tarheels was cancelled.  The state was abuzz, and anger filled college fans that were hoping to see the game on TV between the two national powerhouses.  It didn't matter that conditions were getting dangerous, or that a state of emergency was declared in the state.  Fans wanted their college basketball game.  They were blowing up social media sites with complaints about the game's cancellation.  It was pure outrage.

Now here is the funny part.  Many of those same fans were using social media to voice their displeasure that their own employers were not letting them out of work early enough to avoid driving home in snowy and icy conditions.  The same fans who were outraged that the game was cancelled due to snow, were upset that their places of business wouldn't close early because of the snow.  They complained that the longer they stayed at work, the worse roads would be.  Obviously, dangerous roads should not have come into play with the athletes though.  Perhaps fans think athletes are immune to accidents or getting hurt.  Fans kept complaining that both campuses are only 8 miles apart, yet were upset that their employers kept them from leaving for their 5 mile trip home.  Common sense was clearly lacking.  Witness these social media posts from one of my "friends" who shall remain anonymous:

"Be careful driving.  It took me 90 minutes to get home when it is usually a 10 minute trip"  That was followed by this post fifteen minutes later:  "Can you believe Duke UNC cancelled tonight?  They're only 8 miles apart from each other."  I kid you not...those were real posts by someone.

To the college basketball fans, the player's safety didn't matter.  The fact that road conditions were eroding didn't matter.  They wanted their game between Duke and UNC.  It was comical and ludicrous at the same time.
